Replacing a toilet is one of the few bathroom jobs where the measurement matters more than the model. Get the set-out wrong and the pan will not sit where the waste is, and that means lifting tiles.

The range covers complete suites, pans on their own, in-wall cisterns, wall-hung pans, urinals and raised-height care models, plus the seats, hinges and flush buttons to go with them.

      Measure before you choose

The set-out is the distance from the finished wall to the centre of the waste outlet in the floor. Measure it first — every suite is built to a specific set-out and they are not adjustable by much.

Then check the trap. An S-trap goes down through the floor; a P-trap goes out through the wall. You cannot substitute one for the other.

Then decide the arrangement. A close-coupled suite has the cistern sitting on the pan, the traditional look and usually the easier swap. A back-to-wall suite pushes flush to the wall with the plumbing concealed. An in-wall cistern hides the tank inside the wall entirely, leaving just a pan and a flush plate — the tidiest of the three, and the one that needs the most planning.

If someone in the house has trouble getting up and down, the care models sit higher than a standard pan and make a real difference.
