A full size toilet suite that happens to be smart

The Zenmo IQ Smart Toilet does everything a conventional wall faced suite does, and then adds warm water washing, a heated seat, warm air drying and hands-free operation on top. It is not a bidet seat bolted onto a pan — the washing, drying, heating, sensors and flush are one integrated fixture, controlled from a remote or from the toilet itself.

It suits new bathrooms, renovations and ensuites where comfort and hygiene matter, and it looks like an ordinary toilet while doing it.

Hands free rimless tornado flush

Two ideas working together. Rimless removes the lip that runs around the inside of a conventional bowl — the place staining and smell start, because a brush cannot properly get up under it. Tornado flush sends the water around the bowl so it swirls rather than dropping down the front, which scours the whole surface instead of just the path the water happens to take.

That combination is what lets a 4.6 litre flush do the work a nine litre flush used to do, and it is why the bowl is easier to keep clean with less effort.

Four ways to flush it

Washing, heating and drying

The integrated bidet seat offers rear wash, lady wash and an oscillating wash, each adjustable, plus a self cleaning bidet spray that rinses the wand before and after use.

Instant heating means the water is warmed as it passes rather than stored in a small tank, so it does not run cold partway through and there is no reservoir of standing warm water sitting in the unit between uses. Seat ring heating is the feature people notice first in winter. Warm air drying follows the wash, and for most people it reduces how much paper gets used.

The seat is a heated auto close seat — it lowers itself rather than being dropped, and it stays warm in winter.

Sensors, screen and night light

Smart sensor cover lifting raises the lid and seat as you approach, so the two surfaces nobody wants to touch are the two you no longer have to. An HD digital screen shows the current settings, and a night light gives just enough light at 3am to avoid turning the main light on.

Foam, UV light and aroma

Three functions that sit outside what a normal toilet does. Foam treats the bowl, the UV light and aroma module handle hygiene and freshness between cleans, and the ceramic itself carries a five-layer glaze so the surface stays smooth and easy to wipe rather than gradually going porous.

No pressure limit

Plenty of smart toilets need a minimum water pressure to run the wash function, which rules them out in older homes, on tank water and on the upper floors of apartment buildings. This one has a built-in booster pump, so it works where mains pressure is low or drops away during peak usage hours.

Extra height, ambulant compliant

The pan is built taller than a standard toilet, and it is listed as ambulant compliant. That is the difference between lowering yourself onto a seat and simply sitting down, and between pushing yourself up off one and just standing.

It matters in two situations. If you are building something that has to meet an accessibility requirement, this is a suite that is made for it. And if you are simply making a bathroom easier for an older parent, or for anyone with a sore back or a bad knee, you get the same benefit without the fixture looking like a hospital fitting.

Water rating

Backflow protection

Any toilet with a bidet function has its water supply looked at more closely than an ordinary toilet, because there is a possible path between the bowl and the drinking water supply. This one is built for that.

What is built in

Overflow protection is built into the cistern. On the supply side there is more than that.

• Dual check valves on the water supply.
• An integral high hazard air gap complying with AS 2845.2 — Water Supply Backflow Prevention.
• Compliance with WMTS 051, and WaterMark certification to AS 1172.1 and AS 1172.2 (licence WMK26997).

An air gap is the oldest and most dependable form of backflow protection there is — water cannot travel back across an open gap of air. Building one into the appliance at high hazard rating is the difference between protection that is part of the toilet and protection that has to be bolted onto your plumbing.

Does that mean no RPZ valve?

Often, but it is not ours to promise. The installation guide is direct about it: check local regulations to confirm whether an RPZ valve is required as part of your installation. Requirements vary with the property, how it is classified and the rules of your water authority.

It needs power

Washing, heating, drying, the sensors and the automatic functions all run on mains electricity, so a power point has to be available at the toilet. On a renovation this is the item that most often gets missed until the wall is closed up.

It runs on a standard 220–240V supply, and there are two ways to bring it in. Concealed wiring is permanent in-wall cabling, which is the tidy option and has to be planned before the wall closes up. Exposed wiring plugs into a normal Australian outlet, and that outlet needs to sit within a metre of the toilet.

Power can be routed behind the pan for a fully hidden installation, or brought in through the access openings on either side of the base. A leakage protection device is fitted to the power cord. All electrical work must be carried out by a licensed electrician in accordance with AS/NZS 3000.

Plumbing connections

Set-out — the number that decides whether it fits

Set-out is the distance from the finished wall to the centre of the waste in the floor. Measure it before you order, because it is the one dimension that cannot be worked around on the day.

The S-trap connector supplied with the toilet is the IS33, which gives you 160mm to 260mm to play with. On a renovation, where the waste is already in the floor and moving it means lifting tiles, that 100mm of adjustment is usually what decides between a straightforward swap and a bad week.

Installing it

This is a three trade job in the sense that it needs water, waste and power all arriving in the right place. Sort those at rough-in rather than at fit-off.

• A licensed plumber confirms the water supply, waste, S-trap or P-trap set-out, backflow prevention and the local water authority requirements.
• A licensed electrician carries out any electrical work.
• Check the dimensions, waste set-out, inlet position, power location and backflow requirements before ordering.

What comes in the box

Three cartons: the cistern, the pan with the smart seat already fitted, and the pan connector. The accessories box holds the valve, stop valve and three-way valve, the hose, the remote control, the power supply box and coupler, and a starter 100ml bottle of foam and 50ml of deodoriser.

Check every part against that list before installation begins — once a plumber is on site with the water off is the wrong moment to find something missing.
