Vanity Stone Tops

A stone top is the working surface of the vanity — the part that gets wet, gets things put down on it, and sets the tone of the whole room. These are engineered stone, sold on their own so a top can be replaced or a cabinet can be matched to a basin you have already chosen.

Widths run from 750mm to 1500mm, with tap hole drillings of none, one or three.

Choosing the tap hole drilling

This is the decision that has to be made before the top is made, because it cannot be changed afterwards without risking the stone.

• No hole — for a wall-mounted mixer or a wall spout combo, where nothing comes up through the bench. Also the choice if the basin itself is drilled.
• One hole — for a single basin mixer mounted on the bench. The most common option.
• Three holes — for a traditional tap set with separate hot and cold handles either side of a spout.

The other measurement to settle is the basin cut-out. An undermount or inset basin needs the top cut to its template, and that cut is made before delivery, so the basin has to be chosen first. An above-counter bowl needs no cut-out at all, which is why it is the more forgiving option when a decision is still open.

Check the depth against the cabinet too — a top that overhangs the cabinet front by more than a few millimetres will catch on drawer handles.
