Bathroom Basins

The basin decides more than it looks like it does. It sets the tap you can use, whether the benchtop needs a cut-out, what waste fitting you need, and how much bench you are left with. It is worth settling early rather than last.

The range covers around 119 basins in ceramic and stone — above counter, inset, semi-recessed, undermount and wall hung — from roughly 300mm to 600mm wide.

The four ways a basin can sit

• Above counter — sits on top of the bench. No cut-out needed, the bowl is on show, and it needs a tall mixer to clear the rim.
• Inset — drops into a cut-out with the rim resting on the bench. The standard arrangement, and it takes a normal-height mixer.
• Semi-recessed — half in the bench, half proud of the front edge. Lets you use a shallower vanity without losing bowl size.
• Undermount — fixed beneath the benchtop so the stone runs right to the bowl edge. Needs a solid top.
• Wall hung — no cabinet at all. For a powder room or an accessible bathroom, and it needs backing in the wall.

Two things to check on every one. Does it have an overflow? That decides which waste fits. And how many tap holes? One for a mixer, three for a tap set, none if the tap is going on the wall.
