The waste is the fitting in the bottom of the basin — the plug and the outlet it sits in. It is a small part that gets chosen last and causes more wrong orders than anything else on a bathroom list, because there are two versions that look nearly identical and only one of them will work.

With overflow or without

Look at your basin. If there is a small hole high up on the inside of the bowl — the one that stops it flooding — the basin has an overflow, and it needs a waste with slots cut in the side of the body so the overflow water can get into the drain.

If there is no hole, the basin is without overflow, and it needs a solid-bodied waste. Fitting a slotted waste to a basin with no overflow means water escapes through the slots and out under the basin.

That is the whole decision, and it is worth walking into the bathroom to check rather than assuming. Above-counter and stone basins are frequently supplied without an overflow; ceramic inset basins usually have one.

Beyond that, match the finish to the mixer above it. A chrome waste under a matte black tap is the detail people notice every time they use the basin.
