Standard or progressive shower mixer
A standard mixer works like a basin tap: the lever lifts for volume and swings for temperature. It is what most people are used to.
A progressive cartridge works differently — the water starts cold and warms as you keep turning in one direction. It means the shower always starts at the same point rather than wherever it was left, which is why progressive mixers are common in care settings and rental properties.
The care models take that further with a longer lever that can be operated with a forearm or a closed hand rather than a grip. They are made for aged care and accessible bathrooms, but they suit anyone with limited hand strength at home.
If you are replacing an existing mixer rather than building new, measure the wall plate on the old one before ordering. A new plate that is smaller than the old one will leave an unsealed ring of un-tiled wall showing, and that is a tiling job rather than a plumbing one.
