Toilet Suite

A toilet suite is the pan, the cistern and the seat sold together as one item, so everything matches and nothing is missing on the day the plumber arrives. It is the simplest way to buy a toilet, and it is what most bathrooms use.

Back to wall or close coupled

A back-to-wall suite has the pan sitting flush against the wall with no gap behind it. The plumbing is concealed and there is nothing awkward to reach around. It is the tidier of the two and the more common choice in a new bathroom.

A close-coupled suite has the cistern bolted directly on top of the pan, in the traditional arrangement, with the pan set slightly off the wall. It is usually the more straightforward swap when replacing an existing toilet.

The measurement that decides which you can fit is the set-out — the distance from the finished wall to the centre of the waste outlet in the floor. Measure it before ordering. If the set-out does not match the suite, the pan will not sit where it needs to, and moving a floor waste means lifting tiles.

Also check whether the waste is a P-trap (out through the wall) or an S-trap (down through the floor). They are not interchangeable.
