Wall Hung Basins

A wall hung basin fixes straight to the wall with no cabinet under it. That makes it the right answer in two very different situations: a small powder room where there is no space for a vanity, and an accessible bathroom where a wheelchair needs to get underneath.

The range runs from around 420mm to 600mm wide, in ceramic, with and without an overflow, from the Urbano, Milan, Forma, Luno, Vola and Mobi ranges. Several are supplied with their fixing brackets.

Fitting a wall hung basin

The wall has to carry the load, so this needs planning before the plasterboard goes on. Noggins or a full backing sheet go in behind, positioned to line up with the basin's fixing points. Retrofitting into an existing wall is possible but usually means opening it up.

The other thing to sort early is the pipework. With no cabinet to hide behind, the trap and the water supply are on show. Three ways to deal with that: bring the pipes through the wall so nothing is visible, fit a bottle trap in a finish that matches the tapware and let it be seen, or use a shroud that covers the trap entirely.

Decide on the overflow too. A basin with an overflow needs a waste with slots in the side; a basin without needs a solid waste. They are not interchangeable, and it is the most common wrong-part order on a basin.
