A laundry needs one thing a kitchen does not: a bowl deep enough to soak in. That is the whole reason a laundry tub is a different product from a kitchen sink, and it is why a shallow bowl in a laundry gets resented within a week.

Sizing a laundry tub

Laundry tubs are rated by capacity rather than width. 30 litre suits a small European laundry or a cupboard. 35 litre is the common household size. 45 litre takes a full soaking load or a mop bucket without splashing.

Slimline versions are narrower front to back, for a laundry where the machine and the tub are competing for the same run of wall.

Most of these come as a trough and cabinet together, which gives you the storage under the bowl for detergent and buckets. The cabinet also hides the plumbing, which in a laundry usually includes the washing machine taps as well as the tub waste.

Measure the run before ordering: tub, machine, and enough clearance to open the machine door fully. That last one is the measurement people forget.
