Tiles cover more surface area than anything else in a build, which means a decision made on a screen gets multiplied across a whole room. Working out a quantity

Measure the area in square metres and add an allowance for cuts and breakage. Tilers usually allow around ten per cent on a straightforward rectangular room, and closer to fifteen where there are a lot of corners, a niche, or the tile is being laid on a diagonal.

Order the whole job at once. Porcelain and ceramic are fired in batches and shade varies slightly from batch to batch, so topping up weeks later can leave a visible line across a floor. If the job has to be ordered in stages, note the batch number on the first delivery and quote it on the second.

Rectified or cushion edge

Rectified tiles are cut square after firing and take a tighter grout joint, so the grout lines recede and a large floor reads as one surface. Cushion-edged tiles have a softly rounded top edge and are laid with a wider joint — the traditional look, and quicker and cheaper to set. Both are in the range, and the choice changes a wall more than most people expect.

Floor, wall or both

Most of the range is rated for floors and walls, but not all of it. Wall tiles — subway, mosaic sheets and the fluted panels — are made for vertical surfaces only. Outdoor formats are thicker and carry a textured surface. Every product page states what that tile is rated for.
