A robe hook takes the things a towel rail cannot — a dressing gown, a wet swimming costume, clothes while you shower. Most bathrooms need at least two and end up with one.

Single or double robe hook
A single hook takes one item and keeps the wall clean. A double hook has two prongs at different depths, so a robe and a towel can hang together without one pushing the other off. In a bathroom used by two people, doubles halve the number of fixings you need.
Placement is the part worth thinking about. The most useful hook in any bathroom is the one on the back of the door, because it is within reach of the shower and it uses wall space that has no other job. The second most useful is beside the shower itself, close enough to reach from inside without stepping out onto a wet floor.
Height is around 1600mm to 1700mm from the floor for a robe — high enough that a full-length gown does not pool on the tiles.
If the hook is going on a hollow door rather than a wall, check the fixings supplied. A door needs a different anchor from a tiled wall, and a robe with a wet towel on it is heavier than people expect.
