Towel Rails

Towel rails are the fittings that decide whether a bathroom feels finished. They are also the ones most often bought last and in the wrong length.

How much rail a bathroom needs

A bath sheet needs roughly 350mm of rail to hang without touching its neighbour. So one 600mm rail holds one towel properly. Two people showering daily need around 700mm of hanging length as a minimum, which means either a 750mm single, a double rail, or two singles on different walls.

Two singles on separate walls dry towels better than one double, because air gets to both sides. A double is the better answer when wall space is the constraint rather than airflow.

Heated rails and ladders run on power and warm the towel between uses. A ladder gives the most hanging length of anything here, in the least wall width, which is why they suit narrow ensuites. They need a power point, so decide before the electrician finishes.

Hang rails at around 1200mm from the floor, leave 100mm clear at each end, and make sure there is solid backing behind the wall sheet — a rail with two wet bath sheets on it is heavier than it looks.
