A tile sample is a single piece of the real tile, sent to you, so you can see it in your own bathroom before you commit to the whole order. Every design in the tile range can be ordered this way.
It is worth doing, because tiles photograph badly. A screen shows you one lighting condition, usually a bright showroom one, and it cannot show you veining variation, how matte a matte finish really is, or how a warm white reads against your existing paint. Marble-look porcelain in particular changes character completely depending on whether the room faces north or south.
How to use a tile sample
Take the sample home and look at it three times: in the morning, under your own artificial light at night, and held vertically against the wall it is actually going on. Tiles are almost always judged flat on a bench, which is the one position they will never be in.
Hold it up against the fixed things in the room — the vanity door, the benchtop, the shower screen frame, the tapware finish. Those are the elements you cannot change later. A tile that looks perfect on its own can go slightly wrong next to a warm brushed brass or a cool chrome.
If you are tiling floor and wall in different tiles, get both samples and put them together, because the join between them is what your eye will land on. And if the room has an existing tile you are matching into, take the sample to the tile rather than the other way around.
