A shower is not one product, it is four or five that have to work together: something to control the temperature, something for the water to come out of, something to hold it, and something for the water to drain into. This page covers all of it.

Putting a shower together
- The control. A plain wall mixer if you are running one outlet. A mixer with a diverter if you want both a rail and an overhead off one control.
- The outlet. A slide rail with a hand shower is the most practical, because the head moves. An overhead rose is fixed but gives the full drench. Most bathrooms end up with both.
- The connection. An overhead rose needs either a wall arm or a ceiling dropper to carry it, and the drop length has to suit your ceiling height.
- The drain. A tiled base with a linear grate, or a moulded base with a centre waste.
The decision to make earliest is whether the mixer is a one-piece unit or a body plus a trim kit, because the rough-in differs and it happens before the wall is closed up.
