A hob mixer set mounts through the benchtop or the bath ledge rather than the wall, so the tap sits on a flat surface beside the bowl. It is the arrangement to use where there is no wall close enough to mount to — an island bench, a freestanding bath with a tiled hob, a basin in the middle of a run.

Fitting a hob mixer set
The critical measurement is hole spacing. A hob set needs its holes drilled at set centres, and once a stone benchtop is drilled that is permanent. Get the template from the product before the stonemason cuts, not after.
Check the thickness of the surface too. Hob mixers are supplied with a fixing stud of a set length, and an unusually thick stone top or a double-thickness mitred edge can leave the stud too short to tighten properly.
Choose the shape to suit what it sits beside. The gooseneck arcs high, which is what you want over a deep sink. The soft-square is lower and straighter and suits a basin or a bath ledge where height would look odd. The pull-out versions bring a spray head on a hose, which needs clearance in the cupboard below for the hose to travel.
