A free standing vanity sits on the floor rather than hanging off the wall. That makes it the simpler of the two to install, and the one to choose when you cannot get behind the wall to add support — a renovation into an existing bathroom, a rental, or any job where the walls are staying as they are.
The range runs from compact 500mm units for an ensuite up to 1500mm for a double basin, including the Bondi, Piccolo, Tiny, Keno, Fino and Roxio ranges. Several models can be fitted either free standing or wall hung.
Free standing or wall hung
Free standing carries its own weight through a kickboard to the floor, so the wall behind it needs nothing special. It also hides the plumbing inside the cabinet, and it gives you the full internal height of the unit for storage.
Wall hung leaves the floor clear, which makes a small bathroom read as larger and makes cleaning under it straightforward — but it needs noggins or a backing sheet in the wall, which has to be done before the plasterboard goes on.
If the bathroom floor is not level, and older ones rarely are, a free standing unit will need packing to sit square. Check the wall behind for the same reason before ordering a wide unit; a 1500mm cabinet will show a bowed wall that a 600mm one hides.
