A bathroom mirror is the one thing in the room everybody looks at directly, every day. Get the size and the light right and the room works. Get them wrong and no amount of tile or tapware fixes it.

Choosing a bathroom mirror

Three decisions, in this order.

Shape. A rectangle matches the vanity underneath and is the safe answer. A round or oval mirror breaks up a room made entirely of straight lines. An arch draws the eye up and makes a standard ceiling feel higher. A cut moon has one flat edge so it can sit tight against a wall return.

Size. Work from the vanity, not the wall. The mirror should be the same width as the cabinet or narrower — never wider. On a 900mm vanity that means 70cm to 90cm. Hang it with the bottom edge 20cm to 30cm above the benchtop.

Light. An LED mirror lights your face from the front, which a ceiling batten cannot do. If you are building or renovating, decide this before the electrician does the rough-in, because a lit mirror needs a power point behind it.
