Rectangular Mirrors

A rectangular mirror is the default for a reason: it matches the shape of the vanity underneath it, so nothing is left looking unbalanced. This range runs from small framed pieces for a powder room up to 200cm full-length leaners for a bedroom or a walk-in robe.

Widths here start around 40cm and go to 100cm for wall-mounted pieces, with the full-length models running 170cm to 200cm tall. Framed versions come in black and rounded-edge finishes; the frameless ones give a cleaner line, and several of the larger sizes are backlit.

Sizing a rectangular mirror over a vanity

The usual rule is that the mirror should be the same width as the vanity or slightly narrower — never wider. On a 900mm vanity that means a 70cm to 90cm mirror. Going wider than the cabinet draws attention to the gap rather than hiding it.

Height is the part people get wrong. Hang it so the top of the mirror sits above the eye line of the tallest person in the house, which usually means the bottom edge lands 20cm to 30cm above the benchtop. That gap keeps toothbrushes and soap out of the reflection.

The full-length models are a different job. They are made to lean against a wall rather than hang, so they need a clear stretch of skirting and enough depth that a door will not catch the top edge. Check the leaning angle against the floor covering, because a rug will change how it sits.
